You should always have a pocket knife, a flashlight, a pen,
a multi-purpose tool and a lighter.
I grab a 10 pack of Bic lighter’s to keep in the drawer, I will
keep one in my pocket, it always come’s in handy. Although I
don’t smoke, I still keep one on me when I’m out and about.
If I need to start a fire, it is so much easier than rubbing
sticks together. I occasionally need to melt the ends of rope
to keep it from fraying, or since the ends of a hole in my jeans
to keep them from getting worse.
Most of us now days use our smart phone’s for a flashlight, but
it is still good to have an actual flash light. I use a head
lamp light all the time at work, I used to keep a flashlight
on my belt, but since I have found it to be much easier to
use the head lamp, I don’t keep the flashlight on me, but I do
keep it in my bag that I keep in the cab of the truck, it still
comes in handy, but for what I do, its easier to not have to be
holding onto a light, as I need both hands free. I started out
with those cheap flashlights, I used to work in a CNC machine
shop, it was a necessity to have a flashlight. I noticed that
the cheap lights wouldn’t light things up to where i could see
what it was that I needed to inspect, so I decided to get an
LED flashlight, it was perfect for that, I haven’t went back to
regular flashlight’s since.
I always keep a pen on me, I have to log time’s for my work,
so I have multiple pen’s. I keep the rest in my clipboard. I’m
not always in the truck when I need to write thing’s down, so I
keep a pen in my back pocket with my wallet, it makes for easy
access and saves time. There are some pen’s that have built in
flashlights, but Ive never found one that really worked well
for me. There are also tactical pen’s but I’ll go into that later.
Pocket knives are good to have, There are a variety of them
out there. Some state’s have law’s regarding the length of
a blade that you can carry. I usually don’t go with anything
longer than 4 inches. Tac-Force Tactical Pocket Knife is great. The blade length is perfect,
Stainless steel and serrated, cant beat it for the price. Get
one for yourself, or get it as a gift for your wife to keep in
her purse.
Multi-Purpose tools come in handy, I prefer one with a pouch
for your belt. This Pro-Master

Ive found it best to keep my flashlight and multi-purpose tool
around back, or to my sides.
