Update on my 2021 Garden

So I have had a few mishaps with the garden this year. The big thing for me is finding time to weed out the garden. I ended up picking up some landscaping fabric, this has helped out some.

We now have 3 children, I’m a stay at home dad and a business owner. So I don’t have a lot of time to be spending out there weeding the garden.

I should have taken the time to do a quick weeding before I put down the landscaping fabric. That was a mistake. There are still a lot of weeds, pretty much just grass that is growing tall underneath it because I didn’t pull it before I laid it down.

There are also weeds sticking out from where I cut the hole’s for the plants. I do weed those out when I see them sticking out.

What I’ve lost so far.

I started out planting broccoli, spinach, kale, corn, carrot’s and bell peppers. I also planted some green beans and pea’s. Those were all planted in the ground.

I was gifted some tomato plant’s, they are producing some cherry tomatoes. I have planted those in the ground also. I was also given some potted cherry tomato plants. The potted plants are doing much better then the ones in the ground.

The only other thing that survived in the ground was the corn.

Two days after I had gotten everything planted, we ended up getting a lot of rain, within 4 days we got around 6 inches of rain. I’m pretty sure that why everything else didn’t really make it. I did have the broccoli survive and it was doing really good, but then it bolted from the heat.

So now I’ve got 2 corn stalks and 2 tomato plants in the ground, that’s all that had survived. I’m really hoping the corn will be good. I want to get the freezer full this year.

I had to start some more seeds.

So since everything else had died out. I decided to just got ahead and start some more seeds. I ended up starting 2 more of all the seed’s I have.

I started them out in a dozen egg carton. It seems to do just fine for starting seeds and is pretty affordable if you’re broke.

So far everything but the carrot’s are growing. I’m not sure why none of that carrots are doing anything. Maybe it was just a bad batch of seeds?

I ended up transplanting the seedlings into gallon jug’s that I had cut up. Since I have a CPAP I go through a decent amount of distilled water. I just save those jugs.

We have also started saving the juice jug’s that the kids drink. They are taller and I like to use those better. The water jugs I have to cut just below the handle part so it doesn’t give me much room to work with but it works.

I have corn, broccoli, kale, spinach, squash, pea’s, green beans and some cilantro growing. I wanted to have some bell peppers this year but it isn’t looking likely. I might just end up buying some bell pepper plants from the store.

I will probably put the squash and corn in the ground once they get a little bigger so that can stick out about the landscaping fabric. I might even put some of the broccoli in the ground also, but I want to see how they do in the containers.

Global food shortages in the near future?

I’ve been hearing and reading of potential food shortages in the near future. Some places have been running out of certain things. But I think that’s mainly just a transportation issue.

What isn’t a transportation issue is the ranchers not being able to have their cattle processed due to multiple issue’s ranging from lack of food and water to not enough people to actually process the cattle.

In some places almond farm’s and other nut and vegetable farm’s. their running out of water or are not able to use as much water as needed. They also have some issues with people to process the stuff as well.

So who knows, we could be coming up on another food shortage.

Every time I go into the store, which isn’t very often, let’s face it, we have 3 kid’s and it’s just much easier to use the free pick up option they have, but on occasions we do actually need to go into the store and so far I haven’t really seen any issue’s with item’s being out of stock.

There are a few things that as soon as they get it in, it sell’s out but other that that it usually just come’s back on the next truck.

What are your thought on a food shortage coming up?
