For some of you, this time of year is when you’re getting ready to send the kids back to school. Well this is my first time with a school aged child. Our oldest will be starting Kindergarten this year.
The wife and I have went back and forth on homeschooling, she isn’t on board with the idea. She want’s the kids to be more socially active, which I understand.
There are programs here in the state that offer remote education and in doing so the children still have access to joining the local school’s sports and activities. But she isn’t sold on it. She want’s the “traditional” schooling.
Back to school shopping!
I’m not sure if every state does this, but in the surrounding states, there is a thing called tax free weekend. For us it’ll be August 6th through August 8th.
This goes for anything school related, also kid related (except toys). You can purchase diapers and wipes, clothes, shoes, back pack’s and other school supplies all tax free for the weekend.
Some states also have no tax on their food. Although Oklahoma is talking about doing that, it isn’t the case just yet.
I haven’t seen any of our school supply list’s for any of the school’s in the area at the local store, but they are getting the supplies put and the stand for the list’s.
Our school has it posted on social media, so we already have it, but were waiting until the tax free weekend to do the shopping.
We usually use the free grocery pick up option’s as it does save time and I mean, who wants to be shopping with screaming kid’s? But for the School supplies we will be going in because we need to pick out some clothes also.
In person schooling with Covid-19?
I think most school’s are going to in person schooling, some are mandating mask wearing for vaccinated and unvaccinated student’s and staff. I’m curious for those who are doing the in person schooling, how do you feel about that?
From what I’ve heard some school’s never really enforced the mask mandates or social distancing. Over the summer there have been a number of outbreaks at different summer camp’s in the area. I do see school’s more than likely having to go back to remote education as it gets closer to winter, but time till tell.
My children do not wear mask’s, they also don’t really do much in the way of being in crowded enclosed spaces such as school’s. their usually either playing in their room’s or were outside playing in the back yard.
A few things that we have done is starting the kid’s on vitamins. This will help build their immune systems up and that will in turn help them fight off different virus’s not just Covid-19. Kid’s are disgusting creature’s if you think about it.
They put whatever they can in their mouth’s, cough and sneeze all over the place, lick door knob’s and tables or window’s.
They are precious individual’s though. Every child starting to become their own person.
Do you feel like we should be going back to school in person with the virus blowing up like it has been? I have noticed that from the map I’ve seen of it. It’s pretty much just Missouri, Arkansas and Northeast Oklahoma that are the hot spot’s right now.
School lunches and Snacks
I’m not sure how the lunches and school’s are in your area, but when I was in school, we had two lines, one line was for hamburgers and French fries and the other was for what ever mystery meat we were having that day.
I have heard that a lot of school’s are being more conscious of what their feeding the kid’s but I’m not sure how it is because I haven’t been there.
I have though about having the kid’s bring their lunches to school and just eat breakfast at home. I feel like they might eat a bit better in doing so. The kids love apples, strawberries and banana’s. Those are more of snack food and I don’t consider that a lunch time meal.
My oldest ended up getting sick for about 2 week’s and ever since then he has been very picky on what he eats. He has been terrified of getting sick again, I can’t really say I blame him, he was really bad there for a few day’s.
But trying to explain to him that he got sick from a bug going around and not from eating, he doesn’t quite grasp that.
So he associates any kind of food with making him sick.
We will let him pick out his back pack and lunch pale that he want’s when we go do the school shopping.
School shooting’s or other emergencies.
Have you talked with your local school to see what the plan’s are for each type of emergency that may arise?
You should get a copy of the emergency plan’s for you local school, this will show you where you need to meet up at to pick up your child for each type of scenario.
That is one thing that terrifies me with in person schooling is school shooting’s. There are a number of troubled people out there.
It also terrifies me of a tornado blowing the school away. Both are not very likely, but possible.
Some school’s in the are have built safe room’s and made other upgrades to their storm shelter’s. We do have tornadoes just about every year, it is very rare for us to not have a tornado at least once within 50 miles during the storm season.
Do you feel like your school could improve on their emergency plans? I know in some case’s you could contact the emergency director’s and give them suggestion’s. In some cases your suggestion could be used and deemed as helpful. In other cases the people in charge are stubborn and won’t l
