In our place near the coast we have a couple of this company's small plug-in units, which work similar to AC, via a fan, and collect water in a reservoir for emptying (I use the water for plants). The units have worked great for nearly 10 years, though recently they started making noise, so we're replacing the fans.
In the meantime, I purchased this thing to tide us over. After a few weeks, the beads had darkened enough that I tried recharging it for the first time, plugging it into a grounded 2-to-6-outlet expansion multi-plug. About an hour later, I unplugged it from the multi-plug to check it since the dehumidifier has holes on the back as well as the front. Not too surprisingly, I found that condensation had accumulated on the surface of the multi-plug, right next to the plug slots! It looked like if I hadn't checked it, it might have formed drops that would have run INTO the electrical socket. NO WAY that is safe (likely short; possible shock or fire; damage to electrical). I'm somewhat surprised that this product is UL listed.
I now use a high-quality grounded extension cord between the plug and the unit so that condensation can escape freely from the back without the hazards of heavy moisture buildup near electrical. I place the unit in a pie tin, where it can't burn anything but itself.
Clearly, the beads absorb a lot of moisture because while the unit's recharging, condensation inside the view window soon obscures the beads altogether. I just hope recharging doesn't burn them so that they no longer work, as others noted. While recharging, the unit seems like it's overheating and emits a strong plastic odor.
After recharging for the first time, I looked at the unit the next morning. Happily, I saw nice refreshed orange beads in the window, no blackened beads, and no condensation. Also happily, no melting or deforming of the plastic had occurred. I made sure the plastic hanger was nice and tight and hung it back in the closet.
About that hanger: It was super hard to insert the first time! It felt like the plastic would surely break. Luckily, it didn't, but I'm not very trusting of it. However, just placing the unit on a shelf, upright, it seems quite prone to tipping over, so I opted to use the hanger anyway.
Note: You have to register your purchase before 30 days elapse to get the (somewhat surprising) 5-year warranty.
I'll update this review if I have anything else to add.
About a year ago I purchased a First Alert fire proof/waterproof safe, which has an airtight seal. After I got it and read the instruction manual I found out that they state that the fireproofing materials used in the safe cause excessive moisture to build up inside the safe and suggest opening the safe on a regular basis and leaving it open to allow it to air out. This is obviously (at least for me) not practical since I got the safe to keep money and other valuables safe.
I shrugged off their warning about opening it and placed my items inside and rarely opened it. I found out after several months that my money and other paperwork was very damp and smelled like mildew. So, then I started opening the safe more frequently, which did not help at all,, considering I live in Georgia where the humidity is already very high (so opening the safe just exposes it to similarly damp air.)
The moisture was so bad inside the safe that liquid would actually pool on the bottom after being closed for extended periods of time.
I then tried placing items inside ziplock bags, which did not work. Then purchased dry bags designed for keeping items dry when boating, etc, and even tried glass storage containers with ridgid plastic lids with gasket seals to place items in (this is what the manufacturer recommends). The dry bags didn't work and moisture still managed to work its way in. The storage containers worked better, but not perfectly.
Then I purchased this Eva-dry E-333, which is the small one. I figured I didn't have that much to lose, considering that it doesn't cost very much. Well, I wish this had been my first purchase as this item works!
The day I recieved it, I opened the safe and noted that there again was some liquid accumulated on the bottom. I placed the Eve-dry inside, along with the packing slip that came with it (to see how the piece of paper did being left inside the safe). I checked back the next day around the same time and all the moisture on the bottom was gone and paper was still crisp and dry. I then left it closed for several weeks and then checked again. This time I noted that the crystals had started to change colors (they were purple-ish-pink) and safe was still dry and paper still crisp and dry also.
I then removed the Eva-dry and plugged it in to refresh it. The next morning the crystals were all blue again and I returned it to the safe.
I had no problems with the plug or it falling out of the outlets. I does have a good bit of weight to it compared to a normal cord or power supply; however, if your outlets are good you shouldn't have any trouble. I had all of mine replaced about 8 years ago because many of the old outlets would not hold plugs well in general. If you have outlets like that, this thing will never stay connected, but not really a fault of the product. Using a power strip would also work fine, if needed.
Bottom line - It works for my needs (small, enclosed space), you don't have to buy refills, and it's very affordable. I wouldn't recommend this to dehumidify a room, closet, etc, as I seriously doubt it would be that effective under those conditions. The reason I say that is that I've used regular electric dehumidifiers before, which are capable of removing a couple gallons of water every few days and although they make a difference in overal comfort, even those don't do much to lower the actual relative humidity reading within the space.

Initially bought for a basement bathroom which is on the colder/danker side. Works really well, but keep in mind it's designed for *really* small spaces, like small bathrooms, laundry rooms, closets, etc.
Make sure you don't overcharge it. I did this by leaving it plugged in for MONTHS at a time because I liked the heat it was giving off as it was warming up my small bathroom, but that will damage its ability to take out moisture. That was my fault for not reading instructions, however, it worked out for me because I'd rather have the heat it gives off than have it act as a mini-dehumdifier, lol. (At least in the bathroom.)
Charge for no more than 12 h in a different area than the one you want to use it in. (The dryer the room you're charging it in, the better.)
I also keep one in my laundry room as it's attached to a cold room as well as one in my utility room. I'll probably buy 2 more - one for a closet in the corner of the basement and another for a very deep shoe closet.
Also, I brought it when I went oversees & it was perfect for keeping luggage less moist. Was unable to charge it there because the adapter I bought didn't really accommodate the pull out plug, but it functioned well for most of the trip.
Will be AWESOME for camping. If you're a camper, get this thing.
